Overview
Plastic waste pollutes the world's oceans significantly, with single-use food and beverage packaging contributing a large portion. Aotearoa New Zealand-based startup, Again Again, addresses this issue by targeting disposable coffee cups, one of the largest packaging waste contributors. New Zealand disposes of nearly 300 million cups annually, while global estimates reach a staggering 600 billion.

The system functions similarly to borrowing library books, providing users with a designated period to return the containers. To encourage timely returns, the system charges users who fail to do so. This approach ensures the containers remain in circulation and continue to be reused. The system also features a vendor dashboard web application, allowing vendors to manage their reusable container inventory.

Introducing a new circular system

NFC for seamless connectivity

We used NFC to allow two devices to communicate wirelessly when positioned closely together. NFC offers a more user-friendly alternative to QR codes, as users simply touch their smartphones to the NFC tag to exchange data.

Service and usability testing

We initially developed a prototype tested it with real users to evaluate the mobile app's usability in real-world contexts. We conducted the testing at Mojo on the Terrace, Peoples Coffee, and Garage Project, gathering valuable insights to refine and enhance the system's user experience.
